One Health

Made by Kyra Cheung

One health is an approach to recognize the interconnection between the health of humans, animals, and the ecosystem. It’s a movement to collaborate experts across all fields to address the risks at the human-animal-environment interface and support global health.

Many infectious and chronic diseases are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between humans and animals. As time goes on, the human population increases resulting in greater contact with animals and environmental triggers resulting in more stressors and chemicals being produced. It’s essential to unite and work to achieve One Health before these pressing issues worsen.

Action

OHSO is devoted to achieving One Health and inspiring advocates to support global health. To tackle international health crises, the concept of One Health must be acknowledged and worked upon across disciplines. Consequently, OHSO promotes communication through speaker conferences and symposiums between professionals from diverse health fields: for instance, environmentalists, dentists, ecologists, public health practitioners, physicians, veterinarians, nurses, etc. OHSO administers educational presentations on topics associated with One Health and helps high schoolers engage in social events.

About Me

My name is Kyra Cheung and I am a high school student at Plainview Old Bethpage John F Kennedy High School. During the year of 2019 the outbreak of COVID-19 resulted in reports showing global responses, including various countries being disproportionately affected. Previously visiting a small island, Lombok, prior to COVID, made me wonder of the possible impact on the area and its population. After researching, I learned that the upsurge in COVID cases closed tourism – a large source of income for many – leaving many locals without money. Seeing the struggles of these people and a community without resources, I wanted to make an impact and learned of the issue of malnutrition and starvation. I found a local organization that worked on helping feed the people of Lombok during the pandemic. With the help of my brother, I created a GoFundMe and raised over $2,000 to buy food packs for those starving with goals of improving food security for the locals. Seeing the effects of my previous efforts I sought to gain new opportunities in the healthcare industry and explore my interests. Over the past two years I have had several lab experiences including time exploring biomedical research at Brown University, research in genetic engineering and synthetic biology during my time in Boston Leadership Institute’s Summer Program last year, and surgical research this past summer, as well as current research under a professor at Texas A&M University. Through these experiences I have researched similarities between animal and human outbreaks, developed theoretical research projects -using CRISPR to genetically engineer plants and humans to minimize chances of diseases-, learned of environmental efforts and its effect on public health, and worked hands-on with animals to learn surgical concepts in humans: for example, performing cataract surgery on a cow eye and coronary artery bypass surgery on a cow heart. From my experiences regarding the well-being of organisms and the environment, I believe it’s crucial to look at humans, animals, and ecology interconnected together when discussing issues within the field of health.

Goals

OHSO’s objective is to create an interdisciplinary partnership between health care, animals, and the environment to advance medicine and public health, addressing the social determinants of health. I aim to collaborate high school students and professionals from various health occupations to put forward unique perspectives and resolutions to modern day animal, human, and environmental health challenges. OHSO strives to provide education, resources, career developing opportunities, and a community to increase One Health awareness.
